'James Graham was on of the earliest pioneers to settle in Melbourne. He arrived in 1839 at the age of twenty and, over a period of sixty years, wrote an enormous number of lively, detailed letters which paint a vivid picture of life in the growing town. All these letters have been preserved in the extraordinary Graham collection, a treasure trove of our colonial history held in the Archives of the University of Melbourne.
The letters in A Man About Town cover the period from 1854, with Graham's departure on a visit to his parents in Scotland, to 1864 and his last Christmas at Banyule, Heidelberg. They follow directly on from those of 1839-54 published in Pioneer Merchant.'
