“In offering this work to the reader, its author does not claim to be anything beyond fairly correct – in many cases not even that.  The work is simply the result of a holiday trip, during which the author gathered as much information for the benefit of his country and of himself as he could in the short time at his disposal.
It may be as well to give the reader an idea of the kind of glasses through which the author saw things.  He was a hard-working country (or “bush”) man, having put in about eighteen years at station management, including extensive agricultural and pastoral work.  Education, in every branch we know of in Australia, is keenly followed, and, finding that what little he had to relate was eagerly accepted, he decided to put before the reading public the rough notes of his journey...”
