“I have attempted to produce a concise but relatively complete set of reference material for artists and students.
Old habits die hard, so I have included rather long extracts from the Ottawa Conservators Symposium which explains the benefits of synthetic canvas supports, and why they are superior to traditional materials, including Belgian Linen.
The section on types of grounds applies equally to acrylic or oil painters. The practical information on acrylic techniques is as complete as possible. I have tried to cater to the need for basic information about how to go about using acrylics. There are very few technical limitations to what can be attempted.
I hope the section on “combination Techniques” will be helpful to the great majority of painters who could benefit from using both types of paint, but may not have thought of it, and may not know how to go about doing it. The example of the “Old Masters” sets the precedent, and the modern methods of use parallel the old ones, but use vastly superior modern materials.
