“”Preface: “Change on Change” is the story of that part of South Australia which, for want of any other generic name, I have referred to as “The Northern highlands”.  Considered by some authorities as the southern slopes of the Flinders Ranges and by others as the northern extremities of the Mt lofty ranges, most of the region has an altitude of more than 1000 feet, with some of it over 2000 feet above sea level.  While on world standards this is far from mountainous country, the altitudes do have some significance by South Australian criteria...
During the first phase of white settlement, the area so defined embraced half a dozen pastoral properties, referred to in this study as the Six Runs.
Very little is known of the Ngadjuri Aborigines, whose tribal grounds included the Northern Highlands.  Rather than attempt a separate study of them, I have woven into the fabric of the main story some glimpses of their life and their adjustment to white man’s ways.”
