'It isn't known just when the first cookies came into existence, nor who was the chef who conceived them.  Primitive diets didn't include anything to fancy, but mention is made in 1563 in England, in what would correspond to our cookbooks, of Simnel Cakes which were small cakes which could not be refused to children who came asking for them on Christmas morning.
