“About a hundred years ago, two obscure young Englishmen visited Australia in the service of William IV, Queen Victoria and the Admiralty. The first young man was Charles Darwin, official Naturalist in His Majesty’s survey ship “BEAGLE”, which sailed into Sydney Cover in 1836. The second was Thomas Henry Huxley, assistant to the surgeon of Her Majesty’s survey ship “RATTLESNAKE”, which dropped anchor in Farm Cove eleven years later. These tow thoughtful young men were years later to produce one of the greatest intellectual upheavals in the history off mankind, but they scarcely made a ripple in the turbulent stream of colonial affairs of the day.
This brilliant account of their activities by the late Professor Jock Marshall is one of the finest pieces of Australiana to be published for many years.”
