“This book is a collection of paintings and drawings of Fremantle, the site for the challenge, and its surrounds, and of the teams’ preparations for the challenge and defence of the America’s Cup.
All of the paintings were done form on-site sketches – some under very difficult circumstances. The artist, Bruce Swann, worked from the flying bridge of a motor launch in a 24 knot wind and from the precarious seat of a small rubber chase boat. At times he sat on a hard pavement in the century heat to capture Fremantle buildings. Some of the spontaneous pen drawings were colour-washed at sea.
From the Victorian facades of Fremantle’s buildings, through the busy fishing harbour and out through Gage roads to the Indian Ocean Cup course, Bruce Swann captures the spirit of “Defence ’87 Down Under”.”
