“Over 2,000 species of fish inhabit the seas around the Australian coastline, yet only a fraction of them are exploited commercially (in contrast Peru, with a much smaller seaboard, has an annual catch nearly a hundred times greater). As a result, few people are aware of the great food resources which lie off the shores of this island continent. For many years Australia has been one of the major producers of wheat and cattle and, possible because of this, its fisheries have been largely overlooked or neglected. Now, when the world is faced with a great shortage of animal protein, the seas around Australia are being more closely investigated for their potential supplies of fish.”
