“Gilbert Percy Whitley, F.R.Z.S., for many years Curator of Fishes at the Australian Museum, Sydney, is the author of some 440 articles and scientific papers, mostly on fishes, which he has studied both in the field and in museums in Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Europe, the United States and India.  He has been President of the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales and of the Linnean Society of New South Wales.  He draws most of his own illustrations, which he regards as diagrams rather than as works of art.”
