"At the beginning of 1944 Hitler knew that the Allied invasion of Europe was imminent - what he did not know, and what his Intelligence Service was at full stretch to find out, was where!
To Hitler's Reich General Montgomery was the embodiment of Allied might - he was the enemy - and they knew that wherever the blow fell "Monty" would be in the van of it. So any little bit of news, any movement Monty made, was reported to Berlin and added to the jigsaw which was their frightful enigma.
From this sprang the most gigantic hoax of the war and one which proved to be the most successful. M.I.5, the British Intelligence Service, conceived the Ruritanian scheme of finding a "double" for Monty and so M. E. Clifton James, an obscure Lieutenant in the Royal Army Pay Corps, found his routine life suddenly shattered and himself whisked into a world of "cloak and dagger" intrigue because he was Monty's double."
