"Father Patrick Hartigan or, as he has been known by several generations of Australian poetry-lovers, "John O'Brien", was born at Yass in 1878, the fourth of nine children. He studied for the priesthood at St Patrick's College, Goulburn, under Dr John Gallagher, a classical scholar and later the Bishop of Goulburn.
In 1921 Around the Boree Log was published. This collection of his poems was an instant success and it is now established as an Australian classic."
