“John Hillaby is an enviably good writer as well as a pedestrian extraordinary. This book is the result of his tramp from Land’s End to John o’Groats. He took the wilderness route, hugging the west and walking alone. He followed the cliff paths of Cornwall, crossed the treacherous bogs of D’artmoor in a fog and reached Bristol by way of the “airy uplands” of north Somerset. Then up the Wye valley through the most beautiful woodland in Britain – the forest of Dean. A roundabout route through the Black Midlands led him into Derbyshire and the foot of the Pennine Way. From there a high track north along the spine of England took him to the Scottish border. In the West Highlands he used the old drove roads and cattle tracks, winding through utterly deserted glens.”
