'Growing up in Adelaide in the 1900s, Maise tells us of her life as a student, from that first day at Nailsworth Primary School to Adelaide High School and later the Adelaide Teachers' College. She gives us a rare and personal insight into the early days of teaching in the public school system as a young girl, from her first country posting in Orroroo, back to Adelaide, then to the Northern Territory and briefly, the Methodist Ladies College before escorting home a group of evacuee children from Britain. Her accounts of her adventures in Alice Springs, then Darwin and Tennant Creek during the war, her holidays to Asia and later her work and life in England as a lecturer on Australia for the M.1.7. Department of the British Government are filled with charm and interest.'
