“Insects are the most numerous of all visible forms of animal life. Yet, because there is such a great variety of them, comparatively little is known about their natural history. For example out of the 55,000 species which have been recorded in Australia alone, only a fraction of one per cent have been studied in detail and often we are virtually ignorant about even the commonest insects which are seen every day.
Insects grow, live and behave in a great variety of ways – even within the same species the young insect can have a totally different appearance and life style from the adult, as in the case of a butterfly or cicada. Their different body structures, methods of flight, feeding and breeding are all engrossing and absorbing topics.”
