"It isn't everybody who has Mark's luck, hitching along the Pacific Highway looking for a wave and fastening on three good friends, all in a week's time.
But Mark doesn't see it as luck right off. Biddy, who gives him his first lift, is an old woman. Lin, auburn-haired and beautiful, is on her way north to get an unmarried sister with a newborn baby out of a jam and is in no mood to be jolly (or to have her VW rammed into from the rear, which is what Mark does). Then there's Par, a "bikie" from the "Chain Gang" who knows more about beaches than surfing or sunshine."
