"Lacquer is the resin of a tree which grows in China and Japan. The technique of working the resin is delicate and slow; sometimes as many as 200 or 300 coats may be needed, and infinite patience is required as each layer must dry before the next is applied. The author describes the different techniques and styles that have evolved from the antiquity to modern times, ranging from simple lotus flower bowls to deeply carved boxes and ornately painted wardrobes."
