From the Preface: "The arrangement is deliberately wayward and evasive, but it is not without plan, for it begins as if with a visitor looking down from the West upon the whole of the city, absorbing suggestions from the early saints and scholars, seeing something of the birds and flowers; he makes his way to Christchurch with its surrounding colleges, then on to the University Church and through the byeways to Magdelan and finally to a more modern aspect. After again looking down from the hills on to the city, this time from the East, he bids farewell."
