“The establishment of a base for guided missiles in the Outer Hebrides caused a good deal of concern for the destruction it might mean of a way of life, and when it was decided to include Great and Little Todday in the scheme there was trouble. Most of the younger Islanders welcomed the idea in hope of material prosperity, whereas the older Islanders were strongly against the Government’s proposal. The decision to evacuate the population of Little Todday to the mainland untied young and old in resistance, but it required the discovery that a hitherto unknown gull was nesting on a small island off Little Todday before public opinion came to the rescue of the Islanders.”
