'A new and unpublished work by Sir Edmund Gosse, author of Father and Son, is an event of considerable literary interest. In 1899 he was commissioned by Lewis Doulton to write a biography of his father, and Gosse's friend, Sir Henry Doulton, the great Victorian potter.
The manuscript remained unpublished and came to the attention of Desmond Eyles when he was collecting material for his history of the Royal Doulton Potteries (Royal Doulton 1815-1965). In editing it for publication, My Eyles has 'unmelted' the first two chapters which Gosse had been obliged to condense into one and has restored most of the deleted passages in those and the other chapters where his own researches into the early Doulton history gave him no grounds to doubt their accuracy.
This work is the only long contemporary account of Sir Henry Doulton that exists.'
