"During the last thirty years of the late 15th century, Renaissance Italy developed a passion for small bronze statuettes.  As ornaments to be enjoyed in the solitude of the study or to enhance an elegant drawing-room, they proved to be so popular that a flourishing industry was soon established.
The finest and most numerous bronze statuettes were produced in Padua; it was in Venice that they acquired independent status; but it was in Florence that the art was born, and there it was logically developed.
The author traces this almost exclusively Italian art through the 15th and 16th centuries, revealing the development of the statuette as an independent creation."
