“What started as a standard kitchen-and-bathroom renovation of an ordinary terrace in inner-city Sydney for owners Michael Mobbs and Heather Armstrong ended up as a revolutionary adaptation of the dwelling to make it a Sustainable House – a house almost entirely self-sufficient in electricity, water and waste disposal. As well, the owners improved the energy efficiency and ventilation of the house, sought to avoid materials made of PVC or which discharged toxic chemicals, and used only recycled timber or timber from plantations or regrowth farms. Nevertheless, the Sustainable House is much like any other house to live in. It looks little different to its neighbours and contains the same modern appliances. The book includes examples of self-sufficient and energy-efficient houses from other parts of Australia, the US, Canada and the UK, and contact details for many hard-to-find suppliers and services.”
