“Author’s Introduction: The land in the Hundreds contained in the District Council of Tatiara has been brought into use for primary production by white settlers in stages over more than a century.  The first settlers – the pastoralists – grazed their sheep on natural growth. Development really began with the arrival of the first wheat farmers who in the 1870s and 1880s put the heavy redgum country under the plough.  Much of the sandy country, however, had to wait until trace elements were available and were developed in the 1940s, 1950s and some not until the 1960s and 1970s.  The reader will quickly notice that the description of the development methods used in the 1940s to 1970s is much more detailed than the description of the methods used by the pioneer wheat farmers of the 1870s and 1880s.  The reason is simple: I was able to talk to the people who developed land in the last 40 years and obtain detailed information from them, in many cases more detail than it has been possible to include in the published pages.  The only information that is available about the 1870s pioneers is what has come down to the third or fourth generation…”
