"The reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette brought French 18th century art to a sumptuous climax. After Louis XV and the exuberant whorls of the Rococo style, artists and designers sought inspiration in the more restrained lines of classical Greek and Roman art. Greek vase shapes can be seen everywhere, from an unusual clock by Lepaute to the design on the walls of Marie Antoinette's boudoir at Fontainebleau. Greek columns, figures in antique dress, and swags of fruit and foliage were all brought into use to add to the classical effect, while artists such as the young Jacques Louis David painted scenes from Greek mythology."
