“In 1958 when exploration crews began exploring for oil and gas in north eastern South Australia, the need for environmental management of their activities was probably far from their thoughts.  Accounts of those early days bear similarities to tales of early explorers and pioneers enduring considerable hardship yet making little impression upon the vast landscape.
This situation has changed over the past decade with the increased scale of petroleum operations in the arid zone.  Roads, camps, water supplies and air strips have enabled greater access and development of certain areas.  Gradually the complexion of the landscape changed from one of wilderness to an area of extensive petroleum exploration and production activities.  This development coincided with growing public awareness and appreciation of natural, unspoilt environments.  Arid ecosystems, in particular, were being re-appraised as valuable natural resources worthy of greater scientific study and representation within the public reserve system.  Increasing numbers of outback tourists reflects this growing interest.  Eventually, state, and federal governments passed legislation and created portfolios to administer and safeguard public interest in the environment.”
