“Septimus Power developed his natural genius within Australia but perfected his techniques and founded his reputation during his first trip overseas. His first artistic love was the bushland and outback activities of Australia, yet he established himself by painting in England. There, he specialised in the equestrian and animal studies for which he became famous, until the first World War gave him the opportunity for vigorous action paintings on the Australian front. The years brought increasing fame in both Britain and Australia. As he alternated between the two countries, he developed and displayed a remarkable versatility. He received numerous large commissions and his portraits, studies, and still lifes were eagerly sought after. His delight in painting animals is a continuing theme through the whole body of his work, and during his periods in Australia he produced many splendid pictures of Australian horses and horsemen. In this volume, a selection of the work of this great Australian artist is published for the first time, in a manner which displays his broad scope and lively talent.”
