“The concept for the Pictorial Atlas was conceived in 1984 by Czech born photographer Milan Roden and myself.
IN Milan’s words – “Thomas all wine books are boring”. He went on to explain how wine books needed to be brought to life by creative photography and design not by academic, cold and plain. I couldn’t but agree but how to bring it to reality that was the question. I had always loved Hugh Johnson’s “World Atlas of Wine”. The first edition was presented to me, back in 1971, for my 21st birthday, by Winemaking Legend Jack Kilgour and I used it extensively in traveling the wine regions of many countries. The topographical maps made it easy to find your way around places like the Bordeaux region, with its more than 5,000 Wine Chateaux. Thus, was born the concept of the “Pictorial Atlas”. Milan and I both loved travel, people and history. We wanted to produce a book that concentrated on the characters of the people in the Wine Industry.”
