"The Australian Painters 1964-1966 provides Americans with their first opportunity to examine in depth the contemporary painting of a nation allied to us in spirit and tradition...Inspired by his forays into state galleries, private collections, and studios throughout Australia.  Mertz though it a pity that more Americans could not see this work and that someone should gather a representative collection for circulation in the United States.  Since no one else seemed prepared to take on the job, Harold Mertz made it his personal project to purchase such a collection of Australian art for the benefit of the American public."
