"Harry Memmott comes from a long line of potters. His grandfather, James Sandison, had a world-wide reputation as a potter and Memmott grew up in the environment of a family pottery, which was later conducted by his uncle, George Sandison.
Memmott studied art at Queensland Technical College. During the war he served with the Army Intelligence Unit in the Pacific, and afterwards completed his formal art training at East Sydney Technical College . Later, he opened a small commercial pottery in Queensland with the help of Mervin Feeney, a master potter. Memmott's art training and industrial experience provided an ideal background for his work as a studio potter."
