“Was this to be England’s year? Was the wonderful success they achieved in beating West Indies earlier in the year to be continued against Australia? Was England, in fact, going to burst to the top of cricket champions of the world?
These were the questions on the lips of all cricket enthusiasts in England as MCC flexed its muscles for the meeting with Australia. The build-up for the test series against the Aussies, their first visit since 1964, was considerable. The MCC, under the able leadership of Colin Cowdrey, had set the cricket world alight with their brilliant performances, and victory, against the might of West Indies. IN the other camp, the Australians, under the captaincy of Bill Lawry, had come to England with a lively young team, including two new star batsmen in Doug Walters and Paul Sheahan.”
