“…The book is not a biography of Wesley, though I do include some new information about him. I give a fairly close account of a few episodes in his life, but only because they disclose so much about his interaction with his followers. Nor is the book a socioeconomic profile of the early Methodist community. Such a profile, based on detailed local studies, would be useful, but I do not provide it. What I do in this book is describe and analyse a relationship between one man, a gentleman and a preacher, and the thousands of plebeians, women, men, and children, whom he took to himself and tried to lead. My theme is seduction, resistance, and the cultural consequences of both.” – Authors preface
