“Paul is twelve years old when his father is badly hurt in an explosion which wrecks the water tank that is vital to the continuing welfare of the Andersons’ outback station. The injured man is flown to hospital, but, with his mother sick with worry, and his sisters too young to understand the implications, Paul realizes that the responsibility for the future of the people and livestock on the station lies completely in his hands. He sets out with his horse and cart to fetch water from Gidgee Bore, five miles away. The challenge of the harsh Australian outback, and the obstacles that Paul encounters during this trip bring him to a new awareness of life, and of man’s essential problems of isolation and survival.
The other short stories in this collection of six share the same “magic and pain and wonder” experienced by children growing up and the same sense of the challenge of nature. The dramatic qualities in this and some of the other stories are off-set by the humour found in later descriptions and incidents.”
