“The legend of the Tantanoola Tiger, which originated in the early 1890s made the small town of Tantanoola in the South East of South Australia, famous throughout the country.  When the ‘Tiger’ was eventually shot, one could sense the feeling of disappointment by all concerned, that the episode had finally come to an end.
It wasn’t long before the ‘Tiger’ reappeared.  Over the years and even in recent times, many sightings have been made of ‘Tigers’ in the South East.
The Bonney name has been associated with the South East since 1839, when Charles Bonney made his famous overland trek from Melbourne to Adelaide via the South East, with 300 head of cattle.  His descendants have lived in the Pt. MacDonnell, Glencoe, and Tantanoola districts since the 1870s.
Neville Bonney has continued this association within the district.  He is an authority on Australian Native Plants, and a well known Field Naturalist.  He has a great feeling for local history which is strongly portrayed in his telling of ‘The Tantanoola Tiger’.”
