"Nothing to do but navigate, and home every three months; no more back-breaking "pully-hauly", sweltering in the doldrums; no more taking in or making sail aloft in a howling hurricane or wading up to the armpits on decks flooded with icy seas; and no more starvation on the bare "whack" of putrid pork and hard biscuits: so James Bisset thought in 1905 when, at 21, he made ready for his first job in steamships and bade farewell to sail."
