Pioneer Bn., he was taken prisoner by the Vichy French Forces in the Syrian campaign.  Taken by air to Athens and from there right across Europe, through Austria, Germany and France to Toulon, he saw Occupied Europe from an angle far different from that of the usual observer.  Very soon after his release by the French he sailed for the Far East and with his Bn. Was landed in Java less than a fortnight befort the Japanese landed on that island...”
