“This short account by Wally Summons of his experiences as a prisoner of war is a very remarkable story – remarkable for its restraint and for the ability of the author to tell of his experiences in simple unemotional terms.  Lieutenant Summons, still little more than a boy in years, has had adventures which far exceed those of most men who live to a rip old age.  Through no possible fault of his own whilst a subaltern in that gallant Battalion, 2/2 Aust. Pioneer Bn., he was taken prisoner by the Vichy French Forces in the Syrian campaign.  Taken by air to Athens and from there right across Europe, through Austria, Germany and France to Toulon, he saw Occupied Europe from an angle far different from that of the usual observer.  Very soon after his release by the French he sailed for the Far East and with his Bn. Was landed in Java less than a fortnight befort the Japanese landed on that island...”
